3.28 CHANGES:
Cord Belt probably BiS for every build that uses a Rare belt now - Anointing Mana Reservation likely is best option, to counter the increased reservation penalty on Auto-exertion, IF you want to autoexert Infernal Cry AND Ancestral Cry.
If you are OK with self-casting Infernal Cry occasionally, then you can anoint damage/tank instead.
Extra support gem corruption means you will need LOTS of Complex Trauma gems - any one of the 5 supports in the PoB would be huge, and also the 6th ideal support could be either Swift Affliction, Deadly Ailments, or Fortify.
Awakened Brutality/Melee Phys are GONE - could get "exceptional" replacements - don't know yet.
How to Level the build:
TL;DR Use Sunder for as long as you want - you can swap to Boneshatter as early as level ~40, but you can stay Sunder into white maps if you prefer.
Act 1
Splitting Steel + Chance to Bleed + Momentum
Decoy Totem
Frostblink
Leap Slam + Faster Attacks
Snipers Mark (optional, SS only)
Act 2
Sunder + Chance to Bleed + Ruthless/Momentum
Leap Slam + Faster Attacks + Momentum
Herald of Purity
Poacher's Mark
Blood Rage
Act 3
Sunder + Chance to Bleed/Cruelty + Ruthless + Melee Phys
(When Bleed Chance is 125%, swap in Cruelty)
Vulnerability
Determination
Act 4
Sunder + Cruelty + Ruthless + Melee Phys
BONESHATTER SWAP level ~40
Boneshatter + Cruelty + Ruthless + Melee Phys
Ancestral Cry + Autoexertion
Infernal Cry + Maim + Culling Strike (optional)
Things you MUST have before swapping to Boneshatter:
-Armour Chest w/ Determination on
-Autoexerted Ancestral Cry
-Inexorable wheel (for End. charges)
-Tribal Fury wheel (for splash/+1strike)
Things you should get ASAP:
-Infernal Cry on (self-cast at first)
-ASAP Warcries cannot Exert travel skills Craft (Belt/Ring/Amulet suffix)(Chamber Act5)
-+1 Strike glove implicit
-Reduced mana cost implicit/crafts
-Mana leech jewel
Complex Trauma Swap
Complex Trauma does SIGNIFICANTLY more self-damage than regular Boneshatter. You can swap to it as early as you want, but the earlier you do, the more careful you need to be when you get to 7+ Trauma stacks - if you start chunking yourself down, you need more PDR before you can use it safely.
Speccing your +3 Endurance charges is huge.
Jack the Axe
This weapon is VERY solid for Day ~1-2 - it will carry you through Red Maps easily. Snag one early on trade if you can/want.
Jack is roughly equivalent to a ~400 pDPS 1h Axe.
Blockcapping:
The 50% Block from Determined Survivor WILL replace whatever block roll you have on your shield
HOWEVER - the Shield Mastery which gives 1% chance to block per 5% on shield IS still based on your shield, not the 50% from Gladiator.
Spell Block & Versatile Combatant
The majority of spell block will come from Versatile Combatant - you will get 2-for-1 spell block for your overcapped attack block.
NOTE: if you increase your MAX attack block, you will LOSE spell block.
Spell Block number breakdown:
(If you have 68% Attack Block)
To hit 65% Spell block cap, you need exactly 44% block
You will need 18% to reach the 68% Attack Block Cap
Then another 26 (doubled to 52).
26+18 = 44
Block Mastery gives +13% spell block
52 + 13% from the Block Mastery = 65
Lucky Block & Azadi Crest
Lucky
Lucky is a mechanic in PoE that makes a number roll twice, keeping the best outcome. In the case of block, your block chance number will roll twice with the "better" outcome being a successful block.
Basically when you are hit, if your block chance roll fails the first time, it will re-roll a second time.
Lucky block on Gladiator is conditional on if you have blocked recently - You will have normal 68/65 block until you block once, then you will have Lucky block continuously until you go 4 seconds without blocking any hit.
Azadi Crest
Makes the Lucky mechanic even better by granting a THIRD roll - so in Gladiator's case, you will get THREE chances to block every hit.
Avoiding Ailments / Stuns
Ailment Immunity
The TL;DR is getting complete Ailment Immunity is VERY difficult without Stormshroud or Ancestral Vision - so get Freeze Immunity from Pantheon, Chill Immunity from Boots, then reduce Shock and Ignite with Pantheons/Flasks/Jewels as you wish.
Stuns
You have 3 main options:
-Rely on Brine King for Semi-Stun Immunity (In my play time, stuns have NOT been a big problem because of how often you block)
-Spend 3 extra points for Unwavering Stance for Stun Immunity (its 3 extra points no matter how you path)
-A 3rd option is to use Avoid Stun flask suffixes and jewels. You could reach 100% stun avoidance this way, but it will be flask-dependent. If you have the Gain 3 charges when hit prefix, this is a fairly reliable
Flasks
TL;DR - RUBY/SAPPHIRE/TOPAZ
Because this builds biggest weakness defensively is elemental damage over time, which is not mitigated by armour and cannot be blocked, I think tri-ele flasks are the best choice (for the +5 max res primarily).
You can opt for Granite/Quicksilver/Sulphur/Jade flasks at your discretion.
Get this Prefix ASAP - (works with blocked hits): Gain 3 when you are hit by an enemy
Suffixes should be (High tier as possible): %armour, %reduced effect of shock on you, %reduced effect of curses on you
Anoint
Hatchet Master (RED/TEAL/GREEN) is probably the best choice almost all the time - it gives you Onslaught for mapping and also solid damage. It's also common/cheap oils.
Before you can get those oils, you can just slap on whatever you can get the oils for.
If you are a trade-league GIGAblaster and get an Onslaught on Hit ring, you can replace it with something else, but I probably wouldn't otherwise.
Divine Shield / Glorious Vanity
Divine Shield and Boneshatter (Trauma) synergize well together because you are constantly hitting yourself with Phys damage - this will give you a recovery layer that is very powerful, especially against the builds weakness - Degens.
Make sure you have at least one Energy Shield roll somewhere on your gear - if you have zero Energy Shield, DO NOT take Divine Shield (it will do nothing)
Glorious Vanity - (VERY Late-Game Option) This Timeless Jewel, if rolled Doryani, grants the keystone Corrupted Soul - this gives you ~800-900 ES and is a powerful late-game HP and recovery layer. Splits damage between Life and ES, letting you recover both simultaneously
GV is point-intense - recommend level ~97+ ONLY
If you are SSF, you will need to farm Legion Emblems, then run Timeless Conflicts while killing Viper Napuatzi as many times as possible (She is usually on the upper-right side of the arena) - bosses can be reset every 25 seconds.
Iron Reflexes
VERY strong option for this build for a few reasons:
Already have ~95+% avoidance layer (block)(dont need evade)
You have some free %evasion scaling already that will double-dip
Azadi Crest is a high-evasion base
You need Hybrid gear anyway if going for Suppression
You path to it for the Faster Bleed wheel anyway
Suppress
Suppress-capping is very difficult on this build and will require sacrifices elsewhere; I probably wont be going for suppress cap. You can reach suppress cap with: 22% - T1 Chest 14% - Helmet 14% - Gloves 14% - Boots (64% total from gear)
You will need to get 36% suppression still, which can be accomplished in a few ways:
Pathing to Suppress wheel (Lucky mastery is VERY strong there)
Suppress Tattoos (Dex is tight)
Small 3-passive cluster with a 10% suppress notable (20 total)
Drop Azadi for a Rare Shield (up to 22%)
Chance to Bleed:
Make sure you have 100% Chance to Bleed WITHOUT your Tincture AND WITHOUT Vulnerability. You will always have 70% total - 30% chance from Glad, 10% from Bloodletting, 15% from Master of Wounds, and 15% from Savage Wounds (FIRST NODES) (70% total)
The other 30% needs to be made up from somewhere:
Savage Wounds right-side 2 points at first
Later on - from Tattoos and/or Eater Glove Implicit - or possibly from some Mirage new power creep stuff.
Aggravate
TL;DR - Aggravated bleeds deal triple damage
Bleed normally deals ~triple damage if the target is counted as moving. In 3.25 the Aggravate mechanic was added, which makes bleeds deal damage as if the target WAS moving even if it isnt.
Gladiator gets guaranteed, free Aggravate for all Bleeds, an incredibly strong damage multiplier.
Without this, you have to rely on chance to aggravate bleeds (various sources), which can be very inconsistent.
Crimson Dance
TL;DR - BAD - DO NOT USE
Crimson Dance allows you to stack 8 bleeds, but they are WAY weaker bleeds (50% less damage) and most importantly cannot be Aggravated (get triple damage). Most skills can barely attack fast enough to even GET 8 bleeds on a target.
This keystone is NOT an option for Gladiator, and ever since the Aggravate mechanic was introduced it has very little use cases.
Bleed Scaling
Bleed damage scales with very specific modifiers, and does NOT scale with others:
Bleed DOES scale with:
Increased (Generic/Physical/Bleed) Damage
Increased (Generic/Physical) Damage Over Time
Damage/Physical Damage Over Time Multiplier
Bleeding/Ailments Deal Damage Faster
Bleed DOES NOT scale with:
Increased Melee Damage
Increased Attack Damage
Increased Damage with 1H/2H Weapons
Rage - (more attack damage)
Leech & Mana Cost
You MUST have a source of Mana Leech on the build. Early, this will come from the Spirit of War notable, along with the 12% Mana Reservation Mana Mastery.
Later, you can switch to Cannibalistic Rite instead. This requires a Phys Mana Leech Jewel to maintain mana leech. (Viridian-only Jewel Mod)
Early, you will only have the Mana Reservation to reserve Determination + Flesh and Stone + 1 auto-exerted Warcry (Ancestral Cry).
Later, you can also auto-exert Infernal Cry - to do this, you must also have Increased Mana Reservation Efficiency on an Eater Helmet implicit.
The less mana reservation you have (variable with Ichor Tier on helmet mod, any extra RMR on jewels, etc) the more uncomfortable your mana will be, and importantly, the worse your Tincture uptime will be.
Minus-Mana crafts are not just for QoL, they are BIG for damage uptime by preventing Tincture falloff.
With 3 of these crafts, plus the Reduced Mana Cost of Attacks Exarch helmet implicit, and the 1 more small point next to Cannibalistic Rite, you can actually lower the cost of your Boneshatter to 0 mana - making it usable regardless of Mana-drains such as Mana Siphoner, Baran ground effects, etc.
Without this small node, the cost would still be only 3 mana, which is excellent QoL and Tincture uptime.
Infernal Cry
Infernal Cry Exerts your Boneshatter and procs Combust when you attack.
Combust is a NEW attack that deals some Phys damage, can proc bleeds, help with clear, and add the utility of Maim (increased damage taken) and Culling Strike.
Charges (Endurance/Frenzy)
Endurance charges are generated from 3 sources:
Aggressive Bastion (On-Kill), Disciple of the Unyielding (On-Kill), Inexorable (When hit)
Inexorable is the most important of these by far, because it enables single-target Endurance Charge generation via Boneshatter - hitting yourself with Boneshatter counts.
Frenzy charges are generated in 2 ways:
Blood Rage (on kill - mapping only)
Exarch Chest Implicit - Generate every 15 seconds
You must have the 100% increased charge duration mastery to sustain Frenzy charges against bosses - critically important.
Endurance Charges can be generated passively (before a boss fight, for example), by casting Forbidden Rite.
You can swap this gem in and begin a fight with all your charges up, if desired
Tattoo Min-maxing
Chance to Bleed Tattoos can let you get more damage elsewhere instead (on the Savage Wounds wheel)
%Phys and %Armour tattoos are both strong options - make sure you manage your Strength, especially if you are using a Royal Plate (293 STR Requirement)
Runegrafts
Runegraft of Treachery is a very late-game option to add another aura (optional)
Runegraft of the Warp is solid - will lengthen your Fortify, etc (optional)
Pantheons/Bandits
Bandits - Help Alira - late-game, if you are over-cap on Res, you can take +1 instead.
MINOR Pantheon:
If you are doing Exarch altars, Abberath for Burning Ground immune
If you are doing Eater altars, Garukhan for Shock Reduction (I basically alternate between these 2)
You can use the Gruthkul (PDR when hit) one early
MAJOR Pantheon:
If you need Freeze Immunity - Brine King
If you dont need Freeze Immunity - Lunaris for reduced elemental damage taken
If you are bossing, Solaris is a good choice
Map Mods / Altars to Avoid
Map Mods:
NEVER RUN:
Reduced Block Chance
(remember,you lose spell block 2:1)
Reflect Phys
Cannot Regen
Cannot Leech
Doable, But Use Caution:
Less Recovery Rate
Monsters Cannot Be Stunned
Monster PDR
Steal Charges
This is a good map regex: "!d en|efl|eec|ur$|gen|tun|uct|o al|on,"
(you can customize your own at
https://poe.re/#/maps and run more/less mods if you want)
Altars:
NEVER CLICK:
Player has less PDR (Eater)
Less Recovery Rate per End. Charge (Eater)
(you will not recover Mana at all)
ANY -Res altars (in Hardcore)
Use Caution:
Take Chaos DoT During Flask Effect (Exarch)
-Armour (Exarch)
Gamble Level Thresholds:
Gambling works like this (according to the wiki): The generated item has an item level between the character's level and the character's level +3.
IN MY TESTING, I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET A +3 LEVEL AXE - so to be safe, you can just gamble at the same level as the axes' requirements:
2Hand Axes:
Woodsplitter: LVL 13
Double Axe: LVL 23
A Double Axe should be good enough to get you all the way through Act 4 and switch to a 1-Hander.
Link to AXES list:
https://poedb.tw/us/One_Hand_Axes#OneHandAxesItem
You will probably switch to a 1-hander around level ~40-50ish - use a 2-hander before that.
1Hand Axes:
Tomahawk: LVL 39
Wrist Chopper: LVL 42
War Axe: LVL 45
Chest Splitter: LVL 48
Ceremonial Axe: LVL 51
Siege Axe: LVL 59
Reaver Axe: LVL 61
Royal Axe: LVL 67

Loot Filter
I don't use special filters - I start with Neversink's (Filterblade) Regular Strictness and I remove stuff over time that I don't want to see anymore.
Highly recommend you familiarize yourself with Filterblade and customize your own filters - it's very easy.
