How it works
The core of this build are two uniques Corpsewalker and Kaom's Command. The concept is simple -> we generate corpses while walking with Corpsewalker that match the level of the area we are in and then Autoexert a warcry to automatically proc corpse explosions with Kaom's Command on a regular basis.
By default this will only do a maximum of 10% of corpse life on a perfectly rolled Kaom's Command so we have to scale this if we want it do serious damage. My path:
-
Broken Faith - this is an extremely unpopular shield especially due to the power level of other equipment in the shield slot. However it provides us with one of the most accessible ways to have permanent Unholy Might which converts all our physical damage to chaos and gives us a chance to wither on hit. Chaos leech and 100% increased armor are nice asides too.
-
To force 0 max energy shield which activates Broken Faith we take The Agnostic. The only mana we use is the small base mana cost from Autoexertion. You can get around this in many ways but the laziest is just to craft two copies of the mod "Non-Channeling Skills Have -7 to Total Mana Cost" on your rings or amulet.
-
Now that our explosions are doing chaos damage we can scale damage a lot more easily with wither from Withering Step and Despair
-
This chaos damage synergy fits perfectly with Occultist which has notables to buff our damage, reduce enemy resists and give us even more chaos explosions with Profane Bloom
-
Obliteration provides even more explosions and buffs our Kaom's Command damage
-
Now all that's left is to scale AoE. The more you have the better. AoE is one of the best scale factors in this build as more overlaps mean more hits mean more damage. It increases the radius of your curses and your flesh and stone. It increases the radius of your withering step. AoE is everything. I have 169% increased AoE in my current setup which is realistically probably overkill.
Pros
-
AUTOBOMBER - hold down left mouse and run around like an idiot!
-
HUGE AoE - the multiple layered explosions mean that you can easily chain through many packs and clear the screen
-
HIGHLY MIN MAXABLE - the entirety of your damage is monster health meaning your damage is relative to the area you're in. This allows you to theoretically do any level of map as long as you can survive allowing us to save currency and skill points on excessive damage scaling. To increase the percent of monster health your explosions do you can scale minion damage because of Spiritual Aid, as well as chaos damage and aoe damage.
-
DECENT MOVESPEED - automating withering step and phase run with no active abilities mean you have a consistenly good movespeed baseline with enough duration.
-
EXPLOSION DAMAGE - this is an interesting wrinkle in the build. We do damage that is not an attack or a spell or even a skill. This means we are immune to map+monster modifiers that might otherwise be annoying such as: reflect, accuracy, evasion, suppression, crit reduction
-
RELIABLE DEFENSES - similarly to our damage source I adjusted the build to not be reliant on traditional defense mechanics that are frequently defeated by map+monster modifiers. We don't care about evasion or armour. We don't rely on charges for defense, nor do we rely on auras. We get flat reduction from huge AoE Enfeeble and Flesh and Stone. Flesh and Stone is an aura but the reduced damage taken is a buff and AFAIK cannot be altered by mobs or maps.
-
CAN DO MANY MODS - because of the two points above we are super resiliant to map mods. There are basically only 4 I look out for now -> reduced max resist, reduced cooldown recovery rate, and reduced buff duration, reduced block chance. All are doable but are either much more rippy or just annoying to play with.
Cons
-
HORRIFIC SINGLE TARGET - Your damage is always relative to the monster level. The corpses you make with corpse walk are to my knowledge similar to white mobs in a map. This is enough to easily kill other white mobs or blue mobs but when you get to rares you'll need a nearby mob or two to blow up to take it down. Uniques like area bosses and pinnacle bosses take a LONG time without help. I'm experimenting with tricks for this one, of which is Vaal Breach to generate a lot of mobs. Because all damage in this build is relative, with enough mobs you can oneshot anything. I've oneshot delerium bosses, map bosses, beyond bosses etc provided they have a pack around them. You could theoretically use a high level volatile dead but that would require significant investment to get a good corpse level.
-
SOMEWHAT UNIQUE HEAVY - you don't have to follow down the AoE overkill path I did but you'll at the very least need 3-4 uniques to play this as an occultist leaving you starved for other resources
Cost
I like to do budget builds so they're more approachable by people who might have less time and currency but there are a few pieces that can be 1 divine or more. The most basic layer probably looks something like this:
-
Kaom's Command -> 1-2 div
-
Corpsewalker -> 10c
-
Obliteration -> 5-10c
-
Broken Faith -> 15-20c
Some nice to have addons
-
Unnatural Instinct -> 1 div. This gives you so much when placed next to the Skittering Runes notable including 36% increased AoE, skill effect and curse reservation
-
Replica Karui Ward -> 10c. 30% AoE, damage, movespeed and dex
-
Carcass Jack -> 5c. Huge AoE, and damage with at least a small amount of life and all-res
Variations
There are a few different variations of this I've roughly pobbed out depending on your desired playstyle that mimic occultist+obliteration explosions:
-
Cheiftain with phys->fire conversion and then get additional explosions from Hinekora, Death's Fury as well as things like the Fire mastery and Infernal Cry. explosions
-
Assassin with phys->cold conversion. Explosions have 0 base crit and are not spells OR attacks but you can force a crit explosion build with Deadly Infusion, brittle through Hatred + Sublime Vision + a Hatred base crit Watcher's Eye. From a quick dabble this might spread your build too thin not to mention would be much more expensive
-
Elementalist with phys->lightning. There's maybe an angle to make a Shaper of Storms elementalist and scale damage through base shock and lightning damage. You could get explosions from Inpulsa's + Storm's Gift
Shoutout
This build was partially inspired by this video about Kaom's Command from Dreamcore. He does great breakdowns on uniques, check his channel out if you haven't already! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYXrV-5xPdM&t=19s&ab_channel=Dreamcore
Feedback welcome!
Lemme know if you have ideas on how to improve the build. Thanks for reading!
