Damage is simulated using DD corpse life that will provide same exact damage that the totem will.
The idea is to use Searing Bond totems which can be scaled through +1 fire gems to increase totem life while also doing fire DoT.
Since we're chieftain with 90% res, we use RF for more fire DoT and more spell damage for searing bond.
And then we use arcanist brand for flame surge/curse while using scorching ray for infusion/stronger exposure since there's nothing else to do while your totem ignites.
Mana cost is a big issue, especially if you want to double curse with Whispers of Doom.
This setup resulted in more damage than using a higher life totem like rejuv/devouring totem since the fire DoT on searing bond provides more damage than the small amount of extra life the other totems give since they can't be scaled with +fire gems and require +all gems.
For pure ignite, Vaal Ancestral Warchief seems the best with 25k life from only tree mods which will be almost 3x of level 24 searing bond totems but its a vaal skill so you'll have to play around souls or Defiled Forces all the time which makes it very skill intensive.
Maybe someone else can come up with a better idea or maybe hit based is the way to go.
