I use a ring with 86% reduced duration of curse skills and anomalous impending doom to get 98% reduced duration on my hex. Then with Doomsday keystone, it doesn't expire for 1 second then gains max doom that I have scaled to 75 and then expires .22 seconds later.
This is the character I made an archmage Hexblast build with so I'm mana scaling and when arcane cloak is up, each doom blast hits for ~1.5million on average. Doom blast also can store 3 charges and along with asenath's gloves, the clear isn't too shaby and it is all automated, all you do is set your curse. The damage falls off on tankier enemies, but the idea of automating it is cool.
You could ditch doom scaling and take the duration to 0.0 seconds for instant doom blasts and scale gem levels and cast speed to match the cooldown time or some other damage scaling like poison. If you still wanted to do high doom scaling you could use decay (doesn't work anymore)which inherits the high more multiplier and then scale damage over time in general and go full poison with big hits. Kane of the Kulemak or something. I've messed with it a little before in heist league but now we can automate it even easier.
Edit: Thought I might be able to convert to a one button build for T16, but the impending doom takes too long to do the boss, maybe if I could get a solid 4 link single target setup. This concept could be used or adapted in a different way to do heist or something else that doesn't require good single target.
